Seven Questions with a Servant: Mike Sisson

NOTE:

Mike passed away in the early autumn of 2022. We decided to leave this interview on our website because Mike’s life exemplified service. We miss him greatly.

1. What's your name?

Mike Sisson

2. Will you please share a little about yourself?

I grew up in St. Albans and will always consider it home, regardless of where I reside. I am married to Amy and we have 3 grown boys, all with two children each. We have a sweet but yappy little dog name Shadow, because wherever you are, she is right behind you.
I am a former police officer in St. Albans, former Union Carbide (Dow) employee and former Process Deputy for the Kanawha County Sheriffs Dept. I am currently an elected Magistrate in Kanawha County nearing the end of my second 4yr term.

3. How long have you been attending/serving at Redeemer?

A little over 20 years. My brother in law became the Director of Music in 1997 and recruited Amy for the choir.
Our life as we knew it was over.

4. In what ways do you or have you serve(d) at Redeemer and which is/was your favorite way?

Currently serving as Elder, Leader of the Drama Ministry and the Safety Team.

5. How has serving at Redeemer impacted you?

I feel like I am a more caring and compassionate person about how I treat others. Not nearly as cynical as I once was.

6. What’s something about you not many folks know?

In my day, I was very good at basketball. Can still hit 8 out of 10 foul shots on most days.
Oh, and... I was in a movie.

7. What do you like most about Redeemer?

The camaraderie. People can be themselves without worry of being judged or ostracized.
